Moses starts  Vayak’hel, this week’s Torah portion, reminding the children of Israel about the sabbath.

In Exodus 35:1-2 it says, “Moses assembled the whole community of the Israelites and said to them, "These are the things that the LORD has commanded you to do. In six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there must be a holy day for you, a Sabbath of complete rest to the LORD. Anyone who does work on it will be put to death” (NET).

This verse is even more beautiful in its original language. The seventh day is to be holy [set apart and sacred] to YAH [Creator of heaven and earth]. This Shabbaton [complete rest] references the weekly sabbath, the Day of Atonement, the sabbatical year, the Feast of Trumpets, and the first and eighth day of the Feast of Tabernacles.

The sabbath is for our body, soul, and spirit. It is for everyone who has said yes to serving God in spirit and truth. Just as faith without works is dead, our souls suffer a slow and agonizing death when separated from the Spirit of truth and life. The sabbath is a part of serving in spirit and truth. Our spirits cannot be revived outside of God’s will, which is our sanctification according to 1 Thessalonians 4:3. The shabbat is a gift from the Father to be used to honor Him by His standard, and when we dismiss it, we dismiss His plan of salvation. He reset time for us so we wouldn’t miss His perpetual gift just as He manifested salvation for us in this generation so that we could experience the promise of eternal life.

I challenge you to study. I pray the revelation of the sabbath is revealed to you. Ask for truth and be willing to listen to the voice of God. Restoring the Branches meets weekly on Shabbat, and we would love to have you join us. Email us at restoringthebranches@gmail.com for more information.

Shalom.
